How to Wear a Headlamp
People rarely blame the fit. They blame the light: it bounces, it lights the wrong thing, it gives them a headache after an hour. Nine times out of ten the lamp is fine and it is sitting in the wrong place at the wrong angle. Here is how to set it once and stop thinking about it.
Getting the band right
Start looser than you think. Slide the lamp on, position it centrally above the eyebrows, then draw the band in gradually until the lamp stops moving when you nod. That is the point to stop. A band tightened past that does not hold any better, it just presses on the temples, and temple pressure is the usual source of the ache people mistake for eye strain.
Check the back of the band too. It should sit on the flat of the skull just above the occipital bump, not slide down onto the neck. If it creeps down while you walk, the band is too loose at the back even though the front feels snug. The tilt: the adjustment most people never touch
The lamp head pivots downward, and this is where most of the benefit hides. Left flat, the beam fires horizontally into the middle distance, which lights up trees and fog and leaves the ground in front of you dark. Tilt it down until the brightest part of the beam falls roughly two to four metres ahead and the whole picture changes: you see the ground you are about to step on, and far less light bounces back into your eyes.
Set the tilt for the task, not once and forever. Walking or running wants that forward-and-down angle. Working on something in your hands wants a much steeper tilt, close to straight down, so the beam lands where your hands are instead of over the top of them. Reading in a tent wants steeper still, plus the low setting.

Over a hat, a hood or a helmet
Over a beanie is the easiest case and often the most comfortable: the fabric spreads the band pressure and stops the elastic pulling hair. Just re-tighten after putting the hat on, because a hat changes the circumference more than you would expect.
With a brimmed cap, wear the headlamp over the cap and push the brim up slightly, or the brim casts a hard shadow line right across your beam. Some people prefer the band under the cap and the lamp resting on the brim, which works but tends to slide.
Under a rain hood, put the lamp on first and the hood over it. Light trapped inside a hood reflects off the fabric and washes out your night vision. If the hood has a wired brim, tighten it around the lamp so the fabric stays clear of the lens.
On a hard hat or climbing helmet, run the band under the helmet's rear cradle or through the front clips if it has them. The lamp then sits on the helmet shell rather than on your forehead, which is more stable and removes band pressure entirely.
Wearing a headlamp with glasses
Two rules. Keep the band above the arms of your glasses so it is not pressing them into the sides of your head, and tilt the lamp further down than you would without glasses. A flat beam catches the top edge of a lens and throws a bright smear across your field of view. Tilting down puts that reflection below your line of sight.
In rain or fog the same principle applies for a different reason: a flat beam lights the droplets in front of you and bounces glare straight back. Angle down, and drop to the wide low setting rather than pushing brightness up.
Long hair, ponytails and braids
Run the rear of the band above a high ponytail rather than through it, so the hair does not push the band down onto your neck. With a low ponytail or a braid, the band sits naturally above it. If the elastic pulls at your hairline, a thin beanie or buff underneath solves it completely and costs nothing in stability.
Stopping the bounce
Bounce on a run is a fit problem before it is a weight problem. Work through it in this order: raise the lamp so it sits on bone above the eyebrows rather than on soft tissue higher up, tighten the rear of the band before the front, and make sure the lamp body is not resting on the ridge of a hat seam. Switching it without touching it
The reason to think about wearing a headlamp at all is that both hands stay on the job. That falls apart the moment you have to grope for a button with gloves on or greasy fingers. The wave sensor closes that gap: with sensor mode active, a hand passed a few inches in front of the lamp turns it on or off. Under a car, carrying firewood, holding a fish, wearing winter gloves, you never touch the lamp.
For close, fiddly work near your face, switch the sensor off and run it as an ordinary button lamp, otherwise your own hands will trigger it while you work. It takes one press.
Looking after it while you wear it
The band is where wear shows first, so let it dry properly after a sweaty or wet outing rather than stuffing it damp into a pack. The lamp itself carries an IPX4 rating, which covers rain, sweat and splashes, so wet weather is not a problem, but it is not made for submersion. Wipe it dry and it keeps performing.
Charge it the way you charge a phone. It takes the same USB-C cable, it is rated at roughly four to six hours of runtime per charge depending on the mode, and topping it up before a trip removes the only real reason a headlamp lets you down. FAQ
Should the headlamp sit on my forehead or higher up? On the forehead, just above the eyebrows. Higher up means soft tissue and hair, which is where bounce and slipping start. Low and central on bone is the stable position.
Can I wear a headlamp around my neck or wrist? Yes, and both are genuinely useful. Around the neck with the lamp turned inward gives you a chest light for close work. Looped around a water bottle or hung inside a tent, it becomes a soft area light.
Why does my headlamp give me a headache? Usually band pressure on the temples rather than the light itself. Loosen until the lamp only just stops moving, wear a thin beanie underneath, and tilt the beam down so less light reflects back at you.
